Every time we travel to Poland, it just so happens that we end up there over a weekend – and surprise, the stores are closed! Only Żabka saves the day 🙂. But to make sure everything goes according to plan, let’s dive into the 2025 shopping calendar. Save it for later!
When Can You Shop on Sundays in 2025?
Here’s the ultimate list of “shopping Sundays” when you can shop without surprises:
- January 26 (last Sunday in January)
- April 13 (Sunday before Easter)
- April 27 (last Sunday of April)
- June 29 (last Sunday of June)
- August 31 (last Sunday of August)
- December 14 (first shopping Sunday before Christmas)
- December 21 (second shopping Sunday before Christmas)
These dates are set by law but keep an eye out for potential updates or changes.
What About the Other Sundays?
If you’re caught on a non-shopping Sunday, don’t panic – there are exceptions to the restrictions. Here are the types of places that remain open:
- Petrol stations and pharmacies – fuel and medicine are always available.
- Flower and souvenir shops – perfect for a last-minute gift.
- Bakeries, ice cream parlors, coffee shops, and restaurants – enjoy a sweet treat or coffee break.
- Shops in airports and train stations – a great excuse to travel.
- Small owner-operated stores – support local businesses!
And, in some cases, even places in military facilities, prisons, or funeral homes – although hopefully, you won’t need those on your trip.
Why Does Poland Have Sunday Trade Restrictions?
Poland isn’t alone in limiting Sunday shopping. Many European countries, like Germany, Austria, and Norway, have similar rules. The idea is to prioritize rest and family time over commerce.
In Poland, these laws have been in place since March 1, 2018, gradually reducing the number of Sundays open for shopping. By 2025, only seven Sundays throughout the year are fully open for trade.
So, before you head out on a Sunday, double-check the calendar or swing by an exempted business for anything you need. And who knows? Maybe these quieter Sundays are a chance to relax and take a break from the shopping rush.
